Shu Cheng Tsao
Working across multimedia, Shu Cheng’s practice is shaped by his background in fine arts as well as his experience as a technician. He approaches materials and methods experimentally, often seeking out processes he has not used before. At the same time, he hesitates to define himself simply as an artist, understanding himself instead as a person who makes art. His practice is less driven by production itself than by a personal desire to observe, document, and reflect.
His works are very personal and can be understood as a form of diary. They document thoughts, questions, and states within specific periods, rather than serving the purpose of being exhibited for a specific public. Recurring themes include memory, time, and space. He is particularly interested in how memories are formed, how they change, and how they can become visible or tangible through artistic processes.
An important foundation of his practice is the engagement with traditional art and art history. He places great value on studying historical forms, techniques, and artistic positions. At the same time, his process remains experimental. This creates a tension between planning and openness. While he usually develops detailed plans once an idea becomes clear, he also deliberately allows accidents, mistakes, and spontaneous moments to enter the work.
