Interview with Nico
What is the first color that comes to mind when you read this question?
The first color that came to mind was orange.
What’s the next country you want to visit?
Maybe Mongolia, for its wide grasslands, with a layover in a megacity. I really want to experience that vibe.
How do you usually start a project?
I do a lot of research and conceptual work before I actually start. I build a story around the idea and create sketches. It needs to make sense. But most of the time, I never start.
If you had to choose, would you rather lose music or color?
That’s a tough one, but I lean toward giving up color. Music is so much more than entertainment. It’s a way of connecting with other people, and I wouldn’t want to miss out on that. Also black and white has its own strong aesthetic. But I’m glad that I never actually have to make that choice.
When you work, do you trust intuition more, or planning?
Intuition does play a role while I’m working on something and deciding to change plans. But prior to that, there’s a lot of planning involved.
Do you ever feel that a work is truly “finished”?
If I have enough time, then yes, I can feel that way. But usually, time is not my friend. I work very slowly.
If you weren’t working in an art-related field, what do you think you would be doing?
I like the idea of working in a natural history museum as a biologist or preparator. It combines my fascination with animals and building things pretty well.
If you were an animal in your previous life, what do you think you would have been?
I think I would’ve been a whale (but one that avoids Arctic, dark waters)
